Discussion: Should the WGC eliminate the match play format? By mustang6560 on 2/22/13
A friend sent me an email last night with the subject, "This is why the WGC match play sucks every year!". The email included a link to a story saying both Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods were bounced in the first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
It sucks Rory and Tiger will spend the weekend in Florida (TV ratings will suffer as a result). But, to suggest the first WGC event of the season "sucks every year" because it uses the match play format is a little dramatic. Match play used to be the format in golf. The U.S. Amateur and the Amateur Championship, which once were major championships, use a combination of stroke play and match play. Some players, including Ian Poulter, think match play is the purest form of golf. But it's not TV-friendly because there is a possibility the player(s) everyone wants to watch (a la Rory and Tiger) may get knocked out before the tournament really starts. It's the first time since 2001 that the top two players in the Official World Golf Ranking were eliminated in the first round. In the 15 year history, only twice have the top two seeds lost. Further, Tiger has won the event three times and Rory finished runner-up last year. What is your opinion on the match play format? Should the WGC drop it in lieu of stroke play, which is a more TV-friendly format? [ comments ] This is great golf. If you can't win your match you don't deserve to play the next day. Tiger and Rory are great but it goes to show that golf is a game played shot bye shot. It does not matter what your world ranking is when your over that golf ball. I love the format as a great change from the normal. As far as TV goes; the announce team did a great job keeping this event fun. 2/25/13
Keep match play! I personally would like to see it more often rather than less. Having played match play, I know it is very challenging and adds a different dimension to golf. Great competition! 2/25/13
Definitely keep. WGC Match Play is always my favorite tournament every year. Every round was great and doesn't matter who is playing, every match is exciting to watch. 2/25/13
Why is this even a question? Yes!! Keep match play. Just because the best players in the world dont win it every year is a good thing. Match play is a classic example of how anyone on tour can play an amazing 18 holes and beat a better player. But when it comes to a 72 hole stroke play event the cream of the crop always rises to the top. 2/26/13
