Hello From the 2013 World Am! By mustang6560 on 8/26/13
![]() A look at hole 2 at Whispering Pines. For the third straight year, I have the distinct privilege of saying, "Hello from beautiful Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!" I'm here to compete in and cover the 2013 Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship, which is the 30th anniversay edition. I took the 6:45 a.m. flight out of Jackson to arrive in Myrtle Beach in time to play a practice round with community members jfurr, birdieXris, Jattruia, and mandelbaum! and a few of their friends. There aren't many activities I voluntarily wake up at 5:15 a.m. to partake in, however, traveling to play golf in Myrtle Beach is one of them! We played Whispering Pines, which is located directly across the street from the newly renovated Myrtle Beach airport. In terms of convenience for visitors arriving via airplane, there isn't a better golf course then Whispering Pines. From the terminal to the clubhouse, it's literally less than a quarter of a mile. ![]() birdieXris in action on the par-4 5th. ![]() jfurr playing coy with the camera on the par-5 12th. For $25 including cart, Whispering Pines was the perfect venue for a warm-up round -- and boy did I need it! As you can see from my scorecard, it took me 13 holes to card my first par of the day. I settled into a groove after the 13th and managed to play the last six holes in two over par. Jattruia was able to show us up with his steady +9 81. He was on pace to shoot in the 70 until his triple on the par-5 14th. ![]() A view from the 17th tee box at sunset with the Myrtle Beach airport in the background. ![]() The slight dogleg right 18th. In terms of quality, Whispering Pines wasn't the best. The greens were slow and bumpy (partly because they had recently aerated) and the fairways were inconsistent. What made the round great was the company (in additional to the weather -- 77* in the middle of summer!). I enjoyed playing with John, Chris, and Jay. We barely know each other in real life, but because we're connected on the community, it felt like we were old friends playing together for the first time in a long time! I'm looking forward to another great week at the World Am this year and I'm glad I can take you along for the ride! I'll post a recap of my day tomorrow including my experience from TPC of Myrtle Beach. [ comments ] no comments posted yet. [ post comment ]
