Veteran golf writer John Strege did some homework and found that the United States' newest athletic hero, T.J. Oshie is one of us. A golf nut.
In fact, the Saint Louis Blues forward is rather good on the golf course, not just a 200' x 85' sheet of ice:  Yep — he sports a 2.4 USGA handicap. Not bad for somebody who only gets to play about four months out of the year. Oshie spends much of his off-season in the Brainerd Lakes Area of north-central Minnesota, especially at Cragun's Resort, which includes two well-regarded courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. And, as other notable hockey players tend to do, Oshie also hosts an annual golf fundraising event. The Oshie Charity Golf Tournament has been held at Kayak Pointe Golf Course near his birthplace in Washington State, at King's Walk in Grand Forks, North Dakota (where Oshie played NCAA Division I college hockey), and in his home town of Warroad, Minnesota. Oshie led Warroad to Minnesota State High School Class A championships in 2003 and 2005. A member of the Ojibwe people, Oshie has a first and second cousin (Gary Sargent and Henry Boucha, respectively) who also played in the National Hockey League. Perhaps not surprisingly, Oshie is a strong enough player to have scored an ace on August 29, 2012 — with his fiancée, Lauren Cosgrove, as a witness: Some NHL analysts have predicted that the Saint Louis Blues will finally break through this year and win the Stanley Cup.
