THE RETURN OF TIGER WOODS

On Thursday, Tiger Woods will return to golf from his latest injury at his silly season off-season event, the Hero World Challenge. Interestingly, he is being paired with another tour player trying to come back from injury: Jason Day.

At any rate, Tiger will hit the first tee at Isleworth G&CC with a swing modified with the help of consultant Chris Como, who is working on a Master's degree in kinesiology and is known for his deep study of bio mechanics.

Woods has also changed his clubs and the ball he will play. As reported by Jonathan Wall of PGATour.com, Woods' bag will look like this:

• Driver: Nike Vapor Speed prototype, 420 cc, non-adjustable hosel. Using Nike's "Cavity Back" design, the driver's "Compression Channel was positioned closer to the leading edge and is wider in the heel and toe to improve forgiveness and generate higher ball speeds on shots that don't hit the center of the face" (Wall).


• Fairway metals: Nike Vapor Speed 3W and 5W, non-adjustable hosel. As with the driver, these clubs contain Nike's Compression Channel and FlyBeam-reinforced Covert Cavity Back.


• Irons: Nike Vapor Pro. As with the big sticks, Woods was involved in the design of these blades. Wall reports that the wear pattern on Woods's Nike VR Pro Blade irons led to the design of the new Vapor Pro blades.


• Ball: Nike RZN Black. For Woods, this will be a pretty significant change, since he has been playing Nike's One Tour D ball for the last four or five years.

At a Nike event in New York earlier this year, Woods commented on the new equipment:

"We were close to having a set right for me earlier this year. About this time last year, we started tinkering around with this stuff. Then, earlier this year, I was getting close to it and then my back went out and I wound up having surgery. When I came back, I was on a limited ball count, so I could not do the testing I would normally do. So I said I would just go out with my old stuff and play it that way."
