TROUBLE IN PARADISE

The news that has stunned the PGA Tour began last night. Robert Allenby, the notable Australian-born golfer, played the Sony Open in Hawaii this week and missed the cut. Before flying home on Saturday, Allenby decided to stop at a wine bar near his hotel at Waikiki. Sometime while he was there, Allenby was kidnapped, beaten, robbed of his cell phone, money, and credit cards. The perpetrator(s) then dumped him in a park more than six miles from the Kahala Hotel & Resort, where the 43-year-old was staying. Allenby suffered several different facial injuries in the attack.

A retired military member found him in the park and brought the stricken golfer back to his hotel. Allenby's caddie, Mick Middlemo, said the golfer awoke with no recollection of what happened.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser has reported that Allenby returned to the wine bar to review surveillance video with police. The attack on Allenby was the only crime reported to Honolulu police on Friday night / Saturday morning.

We are profoundly grateful that Allenby was not injured more than he was, but our impressions of Honolulu as a relatively safe vacation destination have been pretty well shattered.
