Walker walks away with Valero Texas Open By Torleif Sorenson on 3/30/15
Although PGA Tour star Jimmy Walker was born in Oklahoma, he has lived in Texas for most of his life. He attended Baylor University and now lives in the San Antonio region. And so, last week's Valero Texas Open was clearly a "home game" for him. Eventually, Walker outlasted another hard-charging Texan, Jordan Spieth, to capture his fifth PGA Tour win. On Thursday, the wicked winds savaged some really great players, including major champions Jim Furyk (76), Jason Dufner (79), Martin Kaymer (82), and Lucas Glover (82). The young Mexican-born Carlos Ortiz shot 79. Brendon de Jonge shot 83. D.A. Points shot 86. Johnson Wagner and his hideous mustache shot 87. But Walker held things together with a 71. A Friday 67 and a Saturday 69 gave Walker the 54-hole lead — and he stayed cool on Sunday, when his driver betrayed him at the 4th hole and Spieth was mounting a charge up the leaderboard, closing with four birdies. In the end, Walker sank crucial birdies, leaving him a comfortable walk up the 18th fairway and adoring crowds. Interestingly, Walker last played at the WGC-Cadillac at Doral March 5-8 and decided to stay home in Texas, missing the Valspar and the Arnold Palmer Invitational: "I've been working hard. Being home the last two weeks has helped. I needed a little recharge after playing a pretty busy West Coast schedule. I just needed the rest." Have you seen an interesting golf story? Both Walker and Spieth were very impressive on a difficult course. I read this morning where Walker was criticized for his 5 wins coming against fields not loaded with top players. My thinking is that it's their fault for not playing that often. I'd take Walker's 5 wins in a season and a half over some of the higher ranked players that finish higher regularly but have few wins. 3/30/15
 DougEly says:Jimmie's game is more than solid enough to hold up against any of the top guys in the world. And he is a very cool character under pressure as well. He was strong in the Ryder Cup last year too. More than I can say for most of the US team with the exception of Spieth and Reed. I like Jimmie a lot. I'd put a few bucks on him to win the Master's. Jordan too. Rory may be the guy that Vegas gives the best odds, but I would not be surprised to see all three of them in the hunt. I hope Phil can make a run at it too, but I'd be less likely to put my money on him based on his recent woes. 3/30/15
