This course debuted in 1890 with nine holes, then was extended to 18 in 1899. But its prominent architecture history began in 1910, when five-time Open champion James Braid oversaw the first major redesign of the course. Then in 1936, the course was extended in length by Major Charles Mackenzie, brother of the legendary architect, Dr. Alistair Mackenzie. Later alterations were managed by C.K. Cotton.

The course plays from 5,406 to 6,329 yards, but numerous doglegs and fairway bunkers have pushed the SSS numbers above 70.

Visitors and societies are welcome, but should book in advance. The standard visitor walking rates are £50/round or £60/day on weekdays, then £60/round or £70/day on weekends.
