Golf was first played here as the "United Services Golf Club," which was founded by British military officers at least before 1905. Five-time Open champion James Braid redesigned the original nine holes into an 18-hole layout in 1919.

Visitors and societies are welcome at various times, including certain weekend restrictions. The standard visitor walking rate is £25. Various society packages are posted on the club's web site.
