Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the original 18 holes here (the "Island View" and "Lake View" nines), which opened in 1976. Ed Ault and Tom Clark's firm designed the Pine View nine, which debuted in 2001. They then redesigned and oversaw reconstruction of the "Island View" nine (2003-04) and the "Lake View" nine (2005-06).

Although the phrase "championship golf course" is recklessly tossed around in golf marketing, Gordon Lakes actually does qualify as such, having hosted both the All-Army Golf Trials and the All-Armed Forces Championship. In fact, the PGA of America once named Gordon Lakes the best military course in the United States.

This course is located on Fort Gordon, so civilians without a DoD-issued ID must check in at Gate 1, which is located at the intersection of Gordon Highway and Jimmy Dyess Parkway. Advance booking is recommended. The civilian walking rates are $22 weekdays and $28 weekends.
