Cold compared to the last few days. Only about 49 or 50 degrees. Went out late, after the crowds started to subside.
Drove the ball very well all day. The only fairways I missed were by just a few yards left. Score should have been a bit better, but got a lot of bad lies from which I made mostly good shots with less than ideal results. Eg., on par 5 9th after a good, long drive ended up barely a yard off the fairway, I found the ball sitting down in a heavy clump of grass. There was no chance to hit a 3W cleanly, and get it far enough down the fairway to where my next shot would have the best chance at a level lie. Even my 3 hybrid might not be able to get through the clump of grass for good contact. So I went with the smaller-headed 4 hybrid. Got decent club on the ball but the grass slowed down the swing speed enough that it barely went 160 yards and ended up 130 yards out, BUT on a downhill slope. I knew I needed an extra club from that downhill lie. Hit an 8 iron right at the pin. Looked great in the air. Was starting to think it might be long. I yelled at it to get down. It landed two feet SHORT of the green on the false front and rolled back down the hill another yard or so. Left me a poor lie from a tough position. Ended up with bogey. Felt like I played the hole well, but was not rewarded.
Prior, on the 5th approach shot from down by the 6th hole's cart path, 9i ended up in very deep rightside bunker. Toughest greenside bunker on the course in my opinion. Hit a perfect 58* wedge out to 3 feet and saved par.
On the 7th, with the tees all the way back on the teeing area, didn't quite clear the left bunker leaving me a difficult approach out of the steep-lipped trap. Caught the 5-6ft lip with 6i and it fell back in. Then got out with my next try, but only to about 70 yards from pin. Then hit a nice 58* about 3 yards past the pin, which spun back to 3 feet and made the 1-putt to save bogey.
Great drive to begin the round on first, then a nice 7 iron to 15 feet and drained the long putt. Good bird. On 14th, good drive, then an excellent 9i to 6 inches for a tap-in bird. That one was directly in front of the bar's picture windows. Unfortunately, no crowd to cheer that one. Corona virus limited the bar crowd to zero spectators. Waaaah.
Too many bogeys on the day, but played pretty well.
